One of the things I’m most proud of when it comes to my finances is my sustained charitable giving practice. I made a commitment to myself when I was in college - before I had any real income - that when I did get a job, regardless of how much or how little I started out making, I would commit to donating 5-10% each year to impactful causes. That promise I made to myself has been true every year I’ve had an income whether I was making $40K, $80K or $100K+. I believed, and still believe, that if I didn’t start being generous when I didn’t have a lot, I couldn’t trust myself to be more generous when I had a lot because I would never have been in the habit of giving. I didn’t like this idea of “oh, someday when I have loads of money, then I’ll be able to donate a lot”. I believe that whatever amount of money I make becomes the amount of money I’m used to having. Knowing what it feels like to make $40K in the Bay Area and give away $3-4K means that I can be even more generous with a higher income and quiet the greedy voices in the back of my head that think what I have now will never be enough. It’s already enough. It’s always been enough.
